Myra Oyedemi has been a long time visitor to Make-It Springfield, sharing her skills and her smile with the community and signing her family up for workshops on occasion.
Earlier this year, Myra volunteered to host a monthly Crochet Club on the first Saturdays of the month, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Club has blossomed to include new and old friends who stop by to learn and to work on their projects in the company of other crochet enthusiasts.
We asked Myra to tell us a little bit about herself.
Why do you make things?
I make things as a gift of compassion to myself. In making, I am caring for my humanity and nurturing creativity.
Is there a specific environment or material that’s integral to your own work?
I try to incorporate bold colors and beads that transform crochet into my African-American inspired aesthetic. I make what appeals to me.
How did you find out about Make-It Springfield?
I found out about Make-It by searching online for maker spaces in the Western Mass area. I was delighted to find a space existed in Springfield and that Make-It is able to accommodate small group gatherings.
Why did you decide to get involved?
I found that I love to crochet. It can be soothing and a great tool to care for one’s mental health and build community. After often dropping in and having small group gatherings at Make-It, I decided that I could offer my skills and begin to develop a crochet community at Make-It—a safe space where anyone can explore crochet.
What do you tell people about Make-It Springfield?
I often tell people about Make-It Springfield. I share with them that it is a local treasure- a welcoming, supportive space that allows you to dream and create and encourages your vision. It’s an amazing space that is transformed by the compassion and care of the staff.
Tell us more about yourself…
I am a busy working mom of 2 teenagers. Although it is easy to lose yourself in the hustle and bustle, I do carve out time to nurture creativity and be active in my sorority and community.
Great! What’s the best way for people to connect with your and view your work?
I can be found once a month during Crochet Club or on Facebook @myra.made.2024
We really appreciate Myra’s creativity, and the time she generously gives to Make-It and the community of crocheters who benefit so much from her knowledge and skills. Thank you Myra!
